World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – offered by Commissioner Anderson

WHEREAS, the mistreatment of older people and adults with disabilities is a real and serious issue affecting one out of 10 vulnerable adults in Hennepin County; and

 

WHEREAS, While most older adults live healthy independent lives, elder abuse is a threat to their well-being and safety; and

 

WHEREAS, Adult Protection Services received 8,727 reports of maltreatment and investigated 1,757 allegations in 2021; and

 

WHEREAS, Elder abuse is not limited to race, gender, culture, or circumstance and has a significant impact on the lives of individuals and families; and

 

WHEREAS, Isolation is a risk factor of elder abuse and reduces an older person’s participation in the life of our community. And protecting elders is an important part of the work we do at Hennepin County; therefore

Resolution:

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaims June 15, 2022 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, with special recognition to family members, Adult Protective Services workers, social service providers, nonprofit victim services organizations, long-term care ombudspersons, law enforcement officers, judges, legal professionals, health care professionals, and financial institutions who dedicate themselves to preventing and intervening to stop elder abuse.
