Declaring October 2–8, 2022 as Mental Illness Awareness Week in Hennepin County - offered by Commissioner Anderson

WHEREAS, mental wellbeing is important for people of all ages, races, social classes and walks of life; and

 
WHEREAS, people with mental illnesses make important contributions to our families and our communities; and

 
WHEREAS, mental illnesses affects 1 in 5 U.S. adults each year; and

WHEREAS, research shows that the most effective way to reduce stigma is through personal contact with someone with a mental illness; and

 
WHEREAS, stigma surrounding mental health is a barrier to many seeking help; and

 
WHEREAS, greater public awareness about mental illnesses can reduce stigma while changing negative attitudes and behaviors toward people with mental illnesses; and

 

WHEREAS, through public acknowledgment, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners seeks to build awareness of mental illness and mental health so that everyone who desires may receive timely, adequate and appropriate treatment and live healthier more fulfilling lives; and

 

WHEREAS, Hennepin's 23 member Adult Mental Health Local Advisory Council (LAC) advises the County Board, County Administration, and other agencies about policy, programs and services affecting persons with mental illness; to advocate for persons with serious mental illness; and to monitor, review, and evaluate mental health services with the County.

Resolution:

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners  hereby proclaim October 2-8, 2022 to be Mental Illness Awareness Week and encourage residents of the County to participate fittingly in its observance.
